Che cos’è
L’albasia è un legno a crescita rapida originario dell’arcipelago indonesiano, leggero ma caratterizzato da venature fitte e uniformi che si prestano bene alla finitura a calce. Qui la finitura è chiara e opaca e attenua il calore naturale del legno senza nasconderne la texture. Ogni pezzo varierà leggermente per disegno delle venature e tonalità: è nella natura del legno massello, non un difetto.
Come si inserisce in una stanza
- Come portapiante, la finitura chiara passa in secondo piano e fa risaltare il fogliame, una buona scelta per una monstera dalle foglie scure o un pothos ricadente.
- Accanto al letto o al divano, può contenere un libro, un bicchiere e una candela senza appesantire lo spazio.
- In corridoio, offre un punto d’appoggio per una borsa o una ciotola svuotatasche, mentre la forma tribale aggiunge una nota scultorea anche quando è vuoto.
- La finitura a calce si accosta con naturalezza al lino grezzo, alle ceramiche non smaltate e al rattan: la palette di un ambiente lento e consapevole.
- Con un peso di 6,5 kg, rimane stabile senza essere difficile da spostare quando desideri riorganizzare l’ambiente.
Il legno e la finitura
L’albasia (Falcataria moluccana) viene coltivata in tutta Giava e Sulawesi, dove la sua crescita rapida la rende una scelta pratica per mobili e oggetti artigianali. È più leggera del teak o del legno di mango e presenta venature fini e regolari. La finitura a calce viene applicata sulla superficie, senza coprirla con uno strato di vernice, così le naturali caratteristiche del legno restano visibili: una finitura adatta sia agli ambienti contemporanei sia agli interni più eclettici.
Artigianato e origine
L’Indonesia vanta una lunga tradizione di intaglio del legno e produzione di mobili, in particolare nelle aree di Giava e Bali, dove i laboratori realizzano mobili destinati all’esportazione da decenni. La forma tribale di questo sgabello si ispira a quella tradizione vernacolare: geometrica, essenziale e ben radicata, con una solidità che appare ricercata più che decorativa. Le lievi irregolarità da un pezzo all’altro fanno parte di ciò che distingue i mobili in legno massello di questa regione.
Vivere il legno
Passa un panno asciutto o appena inumidito. Evita l’esposizione prolungata alla luce solare diretta, che nel tempo può alterare una finitura a calce, e tienilo lontano dall’acqua stagnante. Se la superficie perde brillantezza, una piccolissima quantità di cera trasparente per mobili la ravviverà senza modificarne il colore. Non è destinato all’uso esterno.
