Amethyst

Amethyst

Amethyst is purple quartz, coloured by traces of iron and natural radiation in the rock. Its name comes from the Greek amethystos, not drunk, from an old belief that it kept the wearer clear headed. Today people keep it for quiet evenings and meditation, and give it as the February birthstone.

Where the colour comes from

Quartz is clear on its own. A little iron in the crystal, changed by the natural radiation of the surrounding rock, turns it lilac to deep violet. Heat undoes it: warmed amethyst turns yellow, which is how much of the citrine on the market is made.

What tradition says

The ancient Greeks linked it with staying sober, and medieval bishops wore it in their rings. It was once among the most costly stones, until large finds in Brazil made it a stone for everyone. In crystal practice it is linked with the crown chakra, with calm and with clear thinking.

How people use it

Most keep it where the day ends: on a bedside table, by a reading chair, beside a meditation cushion. Think of it as a cue, a small and beautiful object that marks the moment you choose to slow down.

Care

Keep it out of strong sun for long spells, as the colour can fade. Rinse in plain water and dry with a soft cloth; avoid heat.

Questions people ask

Can amethyst go in water?

Yes, a rinse in plain water is fine. Quartz is hard and does not dissolve. Dry it afterwards and keep it out of long, strong sun.

How can I tell real amethyst?

Natural amethyst is rarely one even colour: look for zones of lighter and deeper violet. Glass is often perfectly uniform and may hold small round bubbles.

Which stones go with amethyst?

Rose quartz and clear quartz are the usual companions, and a lavender scent suits the same quiet hour.
