Birthstones by month and star sign

Birthstones by month and star sign

Each month has its birthstone, set by the British jewellers' list: garnet for January, amethyst for February, and so on through to tanzanite and turquoise for December. Choose a birthday below to see the month's stones, the stones linked with that star sign, and the stone we keep.

Where the list comes from

British jewellers agreed a standard list in 1937 and revised it in 2013. American jewellers keep their own, which is why October can be opal or tourmaline. Older lists differ again, so more than one stone can rightly belong to a month.

Questions people ask

What is my birthstone?

Choose your month above. The British list names one or two stones for each month, and our finder shows them together with the stone we keep.

Why can a month have two stones?

Lists were revised over time, and an affordable stone was often added beside a costly one, such as rock crystal beside diamond in April.

Is a star sign stone the same as a birthstone?

No. A birthstone follows the calendar month, a sign stone follows the sign's dates and comes from a different tradition.
