Spearmint

Spearmint is Mentha spicata, named for its spear-shaped leaves — spica in Latin, meaning spike or ear. Native to the Mediterranean, it has been cultivated since the ancient world: Greeks crowned their guests with it; Romans used it to scent their bathwater. By the time herbal medicine was systematised in medieval Europe, spearmint had settled into its permanent role — the clean, clarifying mint, the one that wakes the head without landing a blow.

The scent opens bright and immediately sweet, with a soft green quality underneath. It is less sharp than peppermint — no menthol bite, no cold sensation — and rather more like the first breath of a garden after rain.
