Oud
One of the oldest perfume materials in the world — resin-soaked Aquilaria wood, rare and complex, with a rich, animalic warmth that suits the long nights of winter.
Oud begins inside a wound. The Aquilaria tree — native to the forests of Southeast Asia — produces it only when injured, typically by a specific parasitic mould. The tree's defence response is to saturate the heartwood with a dense, dark resin, and that resin is what we call oud, or agarwood. It can take decades to develop. High-grade oud is rare enough to be priced by the gram alongside gold.
The tradition of using it stretches across three thousand years: in the courts of ancient China, in Hindu temple ritual, in Islamic perfumery and the great Arabian tradition that still regards it as the definitive night scent. The name itself is Arabic — oudh — and it arrived in European consciousness along the incense routes, carrying the weight of something precious and far away.
The scent opens with a thick, almost syrupy richness — resinous, slightly sweet, with a dark woody backbone that can read as animalic or smoky depending on its source. There is warmth here, and a certain gravitas. It is not a quiet scent; it announces itself and it lingers. On the skin it develops slowly, revealing new layers over an hour, then staying close for the rest of the evening.
The tradition places it firmly in winter and after dark — the long nights, the closed room, the hour when the day has finally set its weight down. Its companions in the mood register are grounding and inspiration: the sense of being both rooted and slightly elevated. In the intention vocabulary it sits beside intuition and the more private end of love.
The tradition's single piece of practical advice: oud rewards unhurried acquaintance. A drop on the wrist, applied with nothing else to do for the next ten minutes, teaches you more than any description. Let it open on the skin before the evening begins.
