Clear Quartz
Pure silicon dioxide, the most common mineral on earth, clear as ice and old as the stones — tradition calls it the master stone, a companion to all twelve signs and every chakra.
Colourless
Clear quartz is pure silicon dioxide, the most common mineral on Earth's surface — a hard, glassy crystal that forms in so many geological environments it appears almost everywhere geologists look. The name arrives by way of the Old High German quarz, possibly related to the Slavic twardy, meaning hard. The Greeks, finding quartz so clear they thought it must be permanently frozen water, called it krystallos. We inherited the word, and the image, intact.
In antiquity the crystal had practical and ceremonial lives: Egyptians carved it into vessels and amulets; Roman soldiers used quartz spheres to staunch bleeding in the field; medieval Europeans polished it into crystal balls and called the practice scrying, reading shapes in light. By the nineteenth century, physicists had discovered its piezoelectric properties — that a crystal pressed or heated produces an electrical charge. Quartz found its way into radios, watches, microphones. The stone that had once read the future was now keeping it.
The crystal tradition holds clear quartz differently: as the master stone, the universal companion, the one linked with all seven chakras and every sign of the zodiac. Ether — the fifth element, the space beyond air — belongs to it. It is the tradition's answer to the question of where to begin, and where to return.
The practical suggestion is to keep it simple. Choose one quality — clarity, energy, focus — name it plainly, and let the stone carry the note. A quartz point on the desk, a tumbled stone in the pocket. The practice is yours; the crystal is what keeps the practice in sight.
Below: clear quartz in points, clusters, spheres, jewellery and wands. The master stone, and every beginning.
