Nutmeg

Nutmeg is the seed of Myristica fragrans, a tropical tree native to the Banda Islands of Indonesia — the original Spice Islands. Grenada still calls itself the Spice Isle, having received the tree from the Dutch in the seventeenth century in exchange for Manhattan, which tells you most of what you need to know about how the world once valued it. The name arrived in English via Norman French from the Old French noix muscade, itself a rendering of the Latin nux muscata: the musky nut.

The scent is the interesting part. Nutmeg opens warm, sweet, almost camphoraceous — a slow-building heat rather than a bright one. There is wood in it, and something faintly resinous that develops as it settles. On cold skin it performs differently than in a warm room: spicier on first touch, then rounder and more persistent.
