Peppermint

Mentha × piperita — sharp, mentholated, clarifying. The morning scent, the summer scent, the one that cuts through fog and arrives.

Peppermint is a hybrid — Mentha aquatica × Mentha spicata — sterile, spreading through root runners rather than seed, which explains why every peppermint plantation is essentially a clone of the one before it. The plant has been cultivated across Europe and the Middle East since at least the first century CE; the Romans used it freely, and by the time the great herbals were written in the sixteenth century, it had settled into the apothecary shelf alongside lavender and rosemary.

The scent is mentholated in the way that announces itself — bright, clean, with a cool quality that arrives before the mind has time to welcome it. The opening is sharp at the roof of the mouth; the settle is clean and herbal, with the menthol continuing to work in the background for an hour or more. Peppermint does not smell sweet. It smells awake.

In the aromatherapy traditions it belongs to the fresh-herbal family, and the mood register is the one the name suggests: focus, clarity, energy. Summer is its season — when the oils are most concentrated in the leaves — and morning is its hour. It is the scent of the kitchen in early light, of a cleared head before the day's weather arrives.

The practice suggestion the tradition offers is simple: use it the same way at the same time, and let the repetition build the meaning. A few drops in the morning while you name what needs attention today — clarity, steadiness, a fresh start — and let the scent carry the note forward. Peppermint does not force attention; it clears the air that attention needs to move through.
