Hva er Malachite?

Malachite is copper carbonate hydroxide, a secondary mineral formed when copper ore meets water and air over thousands of years. That slow, aqueous process leaves behind its characteristic bands: concentric rings of bright and dark green, sometimes finely needle-thin, sometimes broad and bold. The name comes from the Greek malache, meaning mallow: the plant whose leaves share that particular green.

It has been a stone of consequence for a long time. The Egyptians carved it into amulets, cosmetics palettes and inlaid furniture. The Russians, who hold some of the world's finest deposits in the Urals, used it extravagantly, the pillars of St Isaac's Cathedral, each reported to contain a single piece of malachite weighing several tonnes. Its banded pattern made it a natural for decorative work: carved into boxes, set into jewellery, sliced for tabletops.

In the crystal tradition malachite is the heart's stone. It sits with the heart chakra, the centre of feeling and exchange. The zodiac gives it to Taurus and Scorpio; Capricorn joins them. All three are earth signs with a reputation for staying power, for doing the work that doesn't announce itself. The element is earth, which makes sense: malachite grows from below.

The intentions the tradition gathers around it (protection, healing, courage) are active words. They belong to the person. The stone's role, as the tradition quietly frames it, is to stay present: on the desk, at the bedside, worn close. A physical object keeps an intention in view when the day has other plans. The practice is yours. The malachite is there to hold the note.

Below: our catalogue's malachite: tumbled stones, jewellery and carved pieces. Each one different, each one banded.
