Suarhout, gevormd voor beweging
De bollen zijn gemaakt van suarhout, een tropisch hardhout dat ook bekend staat als regenboom of monkeypod. De warme nerf geeft het geverfde oppervlak een natuurlijke basis, terwijl de handgemaakte afwerking het stuk persoonlijk houdt in plaats van te uniform.
Het spelen van de kashaka
Houd één bol in de palm en laat de andere eromheen bewegen, waarbij je een ritme opbouwt uit de ontmoeting van hout, koord en hand. Begin langzaam. Het geluid geeft directe feedback, zodat het patroon iets wordt dat je hoort, voelt en geleidelijk begrijpt.
Als je het niet gebruikt, houd het dan droog en uit de buurt van langdurige vochtigheid. Veeg het oppervlak af met een zachte, droge doek en vermijd scherp trekken aan het koord.
Waar het instrument vandaan komt
Kashaka-achtige shakers behoren tot een bredere familie van West-Afrikaanse percussie-instrumenten, die op verschillende plaatsen ook bekend staan onder namen als asalato of patica. Traditioneel worden gepaarde shakers gebruikt voor ritme, verhalen vertellen, lofzang en sociale muziek, waarbij de speler zowel schud- als klikpatronen creëert met één klein instrument. Dit stuk is vervaardigd in Indonesië en brengt dat vloeiende handpercussie-idee in een decoratieve houten vorm voor moderne oefening en presentatie.
