De geur
- De coumarine opent met een zachte, hooiachtige zoetheid en een vleugje amandel. Daarna komt de vanille naar voren en maakt die de scherpere tonen ronder en zachter.
- Yara yara, een zacht geurig poeder met de geur van oranjebloesem, vormt de basis van de zoetere tonen, zodat de melange nooit weeïg wordt.
- De rook is zacht en blijft hangen zonder te overheersen, waardoor je de wierook makkelijk kunt branden in een kleine kamer of tijdens het lezen.
- Het heeft de rijke geur van masalawierook, met gemalen poeders die op een bamboekern worden gerold, in plaats van het lichtere, vluchtigere karakter van Japanse wierookstokjes.
Met de hand gerold in India
Satya-wierook wordt in Bangalore gemaakt volgens de traditionele masalamethode: gemalen harsen, houtsoorten en geurstoffen worden gemengd met een bindmiddel, vervolgens met de hand op dunne bamboestokjes gerold en te drogen gelegd. Het resultaat is een dikker, langzamer brandend stokje met een krachtigere geurverspreiding dan gedipte wierook of wierook met een houtskoolkern. Elk stokje wordt met de hand gerold, waardoor de dikte en de manier van branden iets kunnen verschillen.
Zo brand je de wierook
Steek het gecoate uiteinde aan, laat de vlam een paar seconden vatten en blaas hem dan uit, zodat het uiteinde blijft gloeien. Zet het kale uiteinde in een houder of leg het in een asvanger. Houd een raam op een kier: masalawierook produceert meer rook dan de subtiele Japanse varianten. Deze branden doorgaans dertig tot vijfenveertig minuten, al verschilt dat per stokje. Laat de wierook nooit onbeheerd achter.
Het motief van de levensboom
De levensboom komt in veel culturen voor, van de Noorse Yggdrasil tot de kabbalistische Etz Chaim, als symbool van groei, verbondenheid en cycli van vernieuwing. Satya gebruikt de naam om geworteldheid en het idee van terugkeren naar een gecentreerde, geaarde staat op te roepen, hoewel de geur zelf een moderne masalamelange is en geen historisch recept.
