The dhurrie, a flat-woven cotton floor covering, has been made across Rajasthan and Gujarat for centuries, originally produced for royal households and later adopted across the subcontinent as a practical, washable everyday floor covering. Cotton was the natural choice: renewable, breathable, and suited to India's climate. The weaving itself is repetitive and meditative work, the pattern built row by row on a loom.
Care and longevity
Cotton is forgiving to clean, most flat-woven rugs of this type can be spot-cleaned with cool water and a mild detergent, or shaken out and aired. Keep it out of prolonged direct sunlight to preserve the aqua tone; cotton dyes can fade with sustained UV exposure. Avoid leaving it damp, as cotton held wet for long periods can mildew.
