Mill offcuts and garment scraps that would otherwise go to waste are cut or torn into strips, then woven perpendicular to a cotton warp on a floor loom. The result is a textile that is both genuinely recycled and structurally sound: the warp-and-weft construction gives it the durability to take daily foot traffic.

Cotton, salvaged and woven

The material is cotton throughout, warp and weft. Cotton rag rugs are indoor textiles; they are not suited to damp or outdoor conditions, where the fibres would mildew. The multicolour character comes from mixing whatever offcuts are available at the loom, which is why the exact colour distribution varies from rug to rug. What you see in the photo is representative, not a guaranteed repeat.

Living with it

A new rag rug tends to feel crisp and lie very flat. Over weeks of use it relaxes, the surface softens slightly and the rug begins to ripple gently where feet land most often, developing a lived-in quality that suits the craft tradition it comes from. It works well in a sitting room, a bedroom, or a hallway wide enough to take a 150 cm width.

Care

Shake or vacuum regularly to lift dust from between the woven strips. If the rug needs washing, hand-wash in cool water, dyed cotton rags can bleed in a machine wash, and the weight when wet makes a full machine cycle hard on the weave. Lay flat to dry away from direct heat. Keep indoors; prolonged damp will damage the cotton fibres.
