The scent
Frankincense resin has been burned for thousands of years, and its scent is instantly recognisable: resinous and warming, with a woody backbone and a faint citrus edge that lifts it above heavy or cloying. As the brick burns, the fragrance deepens, settling into something quieter and more grounding. The pinewood base adds a subtle smokiness but lets the frankincense lead.
How to burn them
Set a brick on the burner, light the top edge with a match or lighter, and let the flame take for about fifteen seconds. Blow it out so it smoulders rather than burns, then leave it to release its smoke. Each brick will smoulder for several minutes, and you can extinguish it by pressing the glowing end into sand or ash, never water, as that makes it too damp to relight. One brick can be relit a few times over several sessions, depending on how long you let it burn each time.

Frankincense is the dried resin of Boswellia trees, tapped in the Horn of Africa and the Arabian Peninsula for over five thousand years. It was burned in ancient Egyptian temples, traded along the Silk Road for its weight in gold, and remains central to Christian, Islamic and Coptic liturgy today. In Indian and Tibetan traditions, it is used to mark the opening of meditation or prayer, the smoke a gentle signal to settle the mind. This pressed-brick form is a modern adaptation, resin and wood powder combined so it can be burned without charcoal, making the ritual simpler while keeping the depth of the scent.
