What it is

An incense cone is incense pressed into a small cone. Light the tip, blow out the flame and it smoulders from the top down, scenting the room for about twenty minutes. A backflow cone has a hole in its base, so the smoke falls instead of rising.

Why people choose it

  • A scent in twenty minutes One cone scents a room quickly, then it is done.
  • Smoke that falls On a backflow burner the smoke runs down like water, slow and quiet to watch.
  • Easy to keep a few Woods, resins, flowers and spices: a pack of each for different evenings.
  • Small and tidy The ash stays in the holder as a small grey cone.

How to use it

  1. 1

Stand the cone on a heat-safe holder

  2. 2

Light the tip, let it catch, then blow out the flame

  3. 3

Let it smoulder down; a backflow cone goes on a backflow burner

Care: Use a heat-safe holder. Never leave a lit cone unattended. Ventilate the room.

Incense sticks

Always high quality. Used every year as part of adult Christmas presents for colleagues.

Works well with backflow burner

I got these for use with a backflow incense waterfall burner and they work pretty well. They don't burn for very long but the smoke does flow down the waterfall well and gives a very nice effect. I'm not altogether convinced that the scent is really Nag Champa but maybe it's just not very strong or my nose is not very sensitive. I've tried a couple of other types of backflow cones and they didn't work as well as these ones.

Smells good

Cone lasts about 5 minutes but is strong so 5 minutes is enough

Overpowering

Really disappointed with these, I've had to return them. I always use this brand of Dhoop cones and incense sticks, but these backflow cones are unpleasant. I bought them to go with my new waterfall burner. They are quite large and therefore when lit produce huge volumes of smoke. They don't smell particularly nice, not like the other products of same brand and scent, so I don't know why that is. We ended up with a strong overpowering smoke-filled room, heavy headaches, and nearly 2 days to clear the smell with the windows wide open! A backflow burner has to be used in an area where there is no other breeze so has to be used in a room with closed windows, so you can imagine the build up of smoke? Unfortunately I can't recommend these on any level.

Work well but lingering after-smell

These cones work brilliantly to create the backflow smoke effect, and look absolutely amazing when the smoke is pouring down. I've tried Nag Champa and White Sage and both smell lovely, but perhaps not as strongly as regular intense sticks. The problem seems to be the composition of the cones. I suspect that the incense contains a resin or oil that weighs down the smoke, causing it to flow downwards. This leaves a light oily residue on the burner and after the cone extinguishes leaves a burnt plastic smell. I definitely recommend washing the holder between cones as the smell builds over several burns, and two or three will leave your house smelling awful. One at a time isn't quite so noticeable.

Smells amazing

These are so much better to use in a back flow burner and the smell is beautiful, so much better than using the doop cones that come free with the burners

The Incense cones from A/W are the best on the market, no matter what 'flavour' you choose.

Great scent, sadly, doesn't last more than 10 mins.

I got a backflow waterfall burner and was really pleased when I found Nag Champa cones to use with it. (These are specific backflow cones, normal cones will not work as I discovered at my expense) Nag Champa is my all time favourite scent, it has a great energy vibration and calms any person and room within 10mins. Sadly that's how long these cones last, just when the burner gets going properly everything is over. These do not last 20mins as stated.

About this product

Scent and atmosphere
  • Nag Champa has a soft, sweet character, the kind of fragrance that feels familiar in yoga studios, incense shops and calm home spaces.
  • The cone format gives a focused plume of smoke from one glowing point, with no stick core left behind.
  • It suits unhurried moments: lighting before journalling, settling a room before guests arrive, or marking the shift from work to evening.
  • The scent is made for background presence rather than sharpness, filling the space gradually as the cone smoulders.
  • A large pack keeps the ritual easy to return to, without treating each cone as too precious to use.
The cone itself

Always place one flat-side down on a heat-resistant incense holder or dish before lighting.

How to light and use them

Set one cone upright on a heat-resistant surface. Light the tip, let it catch, then gently blow out the flame so the tip glows and releases smoke.

Use in a well-ventilated room, away from curtains, papers, draughts, children and pets. Let the ash cool fully before disposing of it, and never leave burning incense unattended.

Nag Champa in Indian incense

Nag Champa is one of the best-known scents in Indian incense culture, loved for its sweet, temple-like warmth. The name is associated with the champa flower, which holds sacred meaning in India and is often linked with devotional spaces, offerings and daily ritual. In modern homes, Nag Champa is used more simply: to scent a room, create a slower mood, and give a small act of lighting and watching smoke a sense of ceremony.

Common questions

Do incense cones need a special holder?
They need a stable, heat-resistant surface that can catch ash safely. A cone incense holder, ceramic dish or suitable metal burner can work, as long as it is not flammable.
Are cones different from incense sticks?
Yes. Cones have no inner stick, so they leave only ash from the cone itself.
Can I burn more than one at a time?
You can, but one cone is usually enough for a noticeable scent in a room. Burning several at once will create more smoke, so ventilation matters.
