- They sit upright on their own or flat in a dish, and once lit at the edge, the ember creeps slowly across the brick.
- The smoke is fuller and more visible than stick incense, lending itself to moments when you want the room to feel different, meditation, a quiet evening, or clearing the air after a long day.
Guggal resin and pinewood
Guggal is the resin of the Commiphora wightii tree, native to the dry regions of India. It has been burned in Ayurvedic and Vedic ritual for thousands of years, valued for its grounding, purifying quality in temple ceremonies and home prayer. The resin itself is golden-brown and aromatic when heated; here it is blended with pinewood powder to form a brick that burns slowly and releases the scent without needing charcoal.
How to burn them
Place a brick on a heat-proof dish or burner, ceramic, stone, or metal, never wood or glass. Light one corner with a match, let the flame take for a few seconds, then blow it out so the brick smoulders. Extinguish by pressing the ember out in sand or letting it burn down fully; never douse it in water, as that makes relighting difficult. Keep the window cracked if the room is small.
