Colour and first impression

How it is made
Rag rugs of this kind are woven on a loom in India, where the chindi tradition, chindi meaning 'torn cloth' in Hindi, has long turned cotton offcuts and mill remnants into durable floor textiles. Strips of cotton are fed through a warp as the weft, packed tightly together so the finished surface is firm and even. The technique keeps the weave stable underfoot and gives the rug its characteristic ribbed texture.
Cotton and salvaged material
The rug is made from cotton, most likely a mix of shirting, sheeting, and similar offcuts rather than a single source. Using salvaged strips means the material that would otherwise leave the cutting room as waste becomes the product itself. The cotton is soft against bare feet and breathes well indoors, making it comfortable across seasons.
Living with it
Cotton rag rugs tend to soften and settle with use, the surface becoming slightly more supple as the strips bed in. Place it on a smooth floor with a non-slip underlay beneath, cotton on hard flooring will slide without one. It is an indoor textile; prolonged damp or outdoor exposure will shorten its life.
Care
Shake or vacuum regularly to lift dust from between the woven strips. If washing is needed, check whether the colours are stable before immersing fully, dyed cotton offcuts can bleed, particularly on the first wash. Spot-clean where possible, or hand-wash gently in cool water and lay flat to dry away from direct heat.
