Forty centimetres square and carved from Indonesian timber, this panel brings the face of the Buddha into quiet, considered relief. The depth of the carving catches the light differently through the day, a shadow falls one way in morning, another by afternoon, so the piece is never quite static.

★★★★★ L.Beautiful
I did not buy this to hang on the wall but to protect my settee from my dog's muddy paws, when we return from a walk. This way, I have my side (with this) and he has his side - the problem is that he likes my side better now but not a problem as it is far easier to wash then the settee's cushions…

★★★★★ M.Lovely picture.
Lovely picture. The listing said framed, so I was expecting a frame but it actually means canvas is just framed at the back it doesn't have a surround frame on the front. Very happy with it tho a great finishing touch to newly-decorated bedroom.

★★★★★ V.B.As advertised
Really lovely. We fitted this to a door and it looks good. Do check you know what size you're getting as the advert shows the larger one. We measured and went for the smaller one, which is fairly different to the image shown.

About this product
The carving
The relief is worked in layers, with the Buddha's features and surrounding decorative border cut back at varying depths to create shadow and dimension. Look closely and you will find the slight asymmetries that distinguish hand-carving from machine routing: a line that curves a fraction more on one side, a petal that sits a touch deeper than its neighbour. These are not imperfections, they are the record of the tool and the hand behind it.
The figure
The serene, downward-cast expression depicted here follows the iconographic tradition of Gautama Buddha in meditation, distinct from the laughing, round-bellied Budai figure often seen in Chinese folk tradition. In Buddhist iconography, this composed, inward gaze represents the moment of enlightenment beneath the Bodhi tree: stillness, clarity, and the cessation of striving. It is one of the most widely recognised symbols in the world, and one of the most quietly powerful to live with.
The wood
Made in Indonesia, a country with deep roots in decorative woodcarving, particularly in Bali and Java, where the craft has been passed through family workshops for generations. Indonesian carvers traditionally favour timbers with a close, stable grain that holds fine detail without splitting; the warm, mid-brown tone visible in the panel is characteristic of locally sourced hardwoods finished with a light oil or wax to bring out the grain without obscuring the carving.
Scale and placement
At 40 × 40 cm, this is a substantial square, wide enough to anchor a wall on its own, compact enough to sit within a gallery arrangement. It works well centred above a console table, beside a doorway, or as a focal point in a reading corner or meditation space. The panel weighs 1,550 g, so a standard picture hook rated for 2 kg or more is sufficient; check the reverse for the hanging fixture before choosing your hook.
Care
Keep it away from prolonged damp and direct steam, a bathroom with poor ventilation is not ideal for untreated or lightly finished wood. Dust with a dry or barely damp cloth. If the surface feels dry over time, a very light application of beeswax or natural wood oil, buffed off before it sets, will restore the warmth of the grain.
Size and what's included
The panel measures 40 × 40 cm and weighs 1,550 g. It arrives as a single piece; hanging hardware requirements will depend on the fixture on the reverse.
