An incense stick is a fine bamboo stick coated in a paste of woods, resins and scent. Light the tip, let the flame go out, and it glows slowly for half an hour or more, scenting the room.

Bamboo sticks with resin and wood oils
The coated sticks shown in the photo have a dark, textured finish, with plain bamboo ends for placing into a suitable holder.
Lighting the evening ritual
Place the plain end of one stick into a heat-resistant incense holder or ash catcher. Light the coated tip, let it flame briefly, then blow it out so the tip glows and releases smoke.
Burn in a ventilated room, away from curtains, pets and children, and never leave incense unattended. Let the ash fall safely, and allow everything to cool before clearing away.
Oud, amethyst and intention
Oud comes from agarwood and is widely valued in perfume and incense traditions for its rich, dark wood character. Frankincense and myrrh have long histories as ritual resins, often used to give smoke a ceremonial depth. Amethyst, in crystal practice, is traditionally associated with clarity, stillness and the crown chakra; as a pendulum, it is often used as a small focus object in divination or intention-setting. Here, those elements come together as atmosphere and symbolism.
