Picture stones are slabs of limestone or marble cut to reveal patterns formed by mineral dendrites — iron or manganese that branched through the rock over geological time. What appears is landscape: mountains rising through mist, trees along a ridgeline, ink washes where no ink was laid. In Chinese scholarly tradition these are guohua stones, prized for the same reason scholar's rocks were — they bring a fragment of nature's composition indoors, complete and unaltered.
How they are made
The stone is sawn along the grain where dendrites have spread, then the face is ground smooth and sometimes polished. The pattern you see was already there; the cutting only makes it visible. Some are left as rough slabs, others mounted in wooden stands. Each is unrepeatable — the branching happened once, millions of years ago, and this is the cross-section.
