Each stick is built around a bamboo core and coated with a special incense paste, typically made from a mixture of herbs. The visible finish is dark and matte along the scented length, with the bamboo end left uncoated.

Light the coated tip, let it flame briefly, then blow it out so the end glows. Place the plain bamboo end into a heat-resistant incense holder or ash catcher, away from curtains, papers and draughts.
