Amethyst is a variety of quartz, its purple colour the result of iron impurities within the crystal lattice, deepened over millions of years under heat and pressure. The 'aura' finish is achieved by bonding fine metallic particles to the polished surface in a vacuum chamber, a process that gives the stone its characteristic iridescent sheen without altering the underlying mineral. The result is a sphere that reads differently in morning light than it does by lamplight: sometimes a cool lavender, sometimes a warm, almost peacock blue.
