A 1 kg bag of sodalite gemstone chips — small, irregular fragments of natural blue sodalite, polished or tumbled to soften sharp edges, sold in bulk for craft, décor, and creative projects.

    What You Get

    • 1 kg of sodalite chips. These are small stone fragments — typically 5–15 mm each — rather than full-sized tumble stones. A kilogram contains roughly 1,500 to 2,000 individual chips, making this a high-volume supply for projects that require quantity.
    • Natural sodalite. The colour is genuine — a rich, deep blue ranging from royal blue to navy, often streaked or veined with white calcite inclusions that give each chip its distinctive marbled character. No two chips look the same. Sodalite is not dyed or colour-treated; what you see is the stone's natural mineral colour.
    • Chip-sized, not tumble-stone-sized. Gemstone chips are the small offcuts and fragments produced during stone cutting and shaping. They are then tumbled to smooth rough edges, producing irregular, pebble-like pieces that are flat enough to embed in resin, scatter on surfaces, or thread onto wire, but not large enough to display individually like a tumble stone.

    What Is Sodalite?

Sodalite is a deep blue mineral first identified in Greenland in 1811, though it has been used decoratively for much longer. It belongs to the feldspathoid group and is composed primarily of sodium, aluminium, silicon, and chlorine — the sodium content is what gives it its name. It rates 5.5–6 on the Mohs hardness scale: hard enough to hold a polish and resist light scratching, but softer than quartz or agate, so it should be handled with reasonable care.

Sodalite is sometimes confused with lapis lazuli because of their similar blue colour, but they are different minerals. Lapis lazuli typically contains golden flecks of pyrite, while sodalite features white calcite veining instead. Sodalite's blue tends to be slightly more muted and grey-toned than the intense ultramarine of high-grade lapis, but it has its own quiet beauty — less flashy, more restrained, like denim compared to cobalt.

In crystal practice, sodalite is associated with the throat chakra and third eye chakra. It is traditionally linked to clarity of thought, honest communication, rational thinking, and calm under pressure. Whether or not you work with crystals energetically, sodalite's deep blue colour carries a strong visual association with calm, depth, and focus.

What People Use Gemstone Chips For

Chips are the workhorse format of the gemstone world — less about individual display and more about volume, texture, and colour. Common uses include resin art and orgonite production (chips embed beautifully in clear resin), candle making (scattered around the base or embedded in wax), jewellery making (chip bead strands, wire-wrapped clusters, mosaic pendants), plant pot and terrarium toppings, filling glass jars or vases for decorative display, crystal grids, altar decoration, bath ritual scatter, wedding and event table decoration, and mixed-media art projects. The deep blue of sodalite makes it particularly striking against white, gold, silver, or natural wood tones.

    Physical Details

    • 1 kg bag of natural sodalite gemstone chips
    • Approximately 1,500–2,000 chips per kilogram (natural variation in chip size and density means this is an estimate)
    • Individual chip size approximately 5–15 mm
    • Natural colour — deep blue with white calcite veining, untreated
    • Tumbled to smooth rough edges
    • Hardness: 5.5–6 Mohs

    A Note on Gifting

A full kilogram of gemstone chips is more of a craft supply than a personal gift — it is a lot of stone. However, you can easily portion it into smaller amounts for gifting: a handful of sodalite chips in a small glass jar or drawstring pouch makes a lovely addition to a crystal gift set, a candle-making kit, or a resin art starter pack. The deep blue colour photographs well and looks immediately appealing, which also makes it a good choice for handmade gifts where visual impact matters.

    Common Questions

Are these the same as sodalite tumble stones?
No. Tumble stones are larger (typically 20–30 mm), individually displayable, and sold in smaller quantities. Chips are much smaller fragments (5–15 mm), sold in bulk, and designed for craft, décor, and embedding rather than individual display.

    Is the colour natural?
Yes. Sodalite's blue colour is entirely natural — it is not dyed or colour-enhanced. The white veining is natural calcite inclusion, which is characteristic of the mineral.

Can I use these in water or an aquarium?
Sodalite is generally safe for brief contact with water, but prolonged submersion is not recommended. The stone can absorb water over time, and the calcite inclusions may react with acidic water. For aquarium use, research the specific water chemistry requirements first.

How do sodalite chips compare to lapis lazuli chips?
Similar blue colour, different mineral. Sodalite is typically more muted in tone with white calcite veining. Lapis lazuli is a deeper, more vivid blue, often with golden pyrite flecks. Sodalite is generally more affordable than lapis lazuli, making it a better choice for bulk craft projects where you need volume.
