The shell is made from jackfruit wood, with polyester string running down the body and a rubber base at the foot. The photo shows a warm brown finish with dark decorative linework, black lacing around the head, and a pale playing surface marked with the Soul Sound emblem.

Sit with the drum angled slightly away from you, leaving the base open so the sound can breathe. Use relaxed hands rather than force: a flat palm in the centre for bass, fingers together near the edge for tone, and a quicker edge stroke for slap.

Keep it dry and away from damp storage. Wipe the shell and head with a soft, dry cloth after playing, and avoid placing heavy objects on the drumhead.

The djembe comes from West Africa, where it has long been used for gathering, dance, ceremony and shared rhythm.
