What you'll notice
- The wax is a soft, matte ivory, cut into small, chunky pieces with softened edges, easy to hold and to drop into a burner dish.
- The box looks like a keepsake. The gold line-drawing of branches, blooms and a small bird makes it as pleasing on a shelf as in a drawer.
- Each melt is its own small portion, so you can use one at a time and change the room's atmosphere as often as you like.
- The scent comes from perfume, and the wax is soy, so what you melt is plain, pale and unfussy, with nothing added for show.
The ritual
A wax melt is a quiet sort of ritual: choose the fragrance, set a melt in the dish, and let the warmth do the rest. It goes into the dish of a wax or oil burner with an unscented tealight beneath, or into an electric warmer. There is no flame on the wax itself. As it softens and turns to liquid, the fragrance spreads through the room more gently and gradually than it would from a candle.
Using your melts
Place one or two pieces in the burner dish and light the tealight below, or switch on your warmer. When the scent fades, replace the melt with a fresh piece. Keep the burner on a stable, heat-safe surface, and never leave a lit tealight unattended.
