Pinewood and juniper oil
The bricks are made from finely milled pinewood powder, pressed tight and infused with natural juniper oil extracted from juniper berries and needles. The wood provides the slow burn; the oil carries the scent. No synthetic fragrance, no binder beyond the wood's own resins. They crumble slightly if handled roughly, so store them flat in the box.
How to burn them
Place one brick in the burner's central well and light one corner with a match or lighter. Let it catch, then blow out any flame so it smoulders. The smoke will curl upwards, thick and steady. When finished, let it burn down completely or press the ember gently into sand to extinguish, never water, as damp bricks won't relight. The burner will be hot during and after use, so keep it on tile, stone or a heat-proof mat, away from curtains and papers.
Juniper in the old smoke traditions
Juniper has been burned for centuries across Europe and Asia, from the Scottish Highlands to the Himalayas, as a smoke herb for cleansing spaces and marking seasonal turns. In Tibetan and Himalayan traditions, juniper is burned at dawn and dusk as an offering and to clear the air; in northern Europe, it was burned in sickrooms and byres to freshen stale air. The scent is sharp and grounding, traditionally associated with protection and renewal, though today it is used simply for the clean, forest-like quality of the smoke and the small ritual of lighting it.
