Handmade paper journals hold something a mass-produced notebook never can — the quiet irregularity of the page, the gentle tooth of the fibre, the knowledge that each sheet was shaped by hand. In our Library collection, that tradition comes through in every item: Lokta paper journals and artisan craft papers made in Nepal, where the craft of handmade paper has been passed down through generations.
What you will find here
Our collection centres on handmade paper journals crafted from Lokta fibre — a renewable bark material harvested without harming the shrub. The result is a paper that is simultaneously delicate and resilient, with a beautiful texture that holds ink beautifully. We stock A5 journals that slip easily into a bag for daily reflection, alongside handmade notebooks in larger formats for those who prefer to spread out at a desk. Sizes range from portable A5 to generous A4, and sheets are available individually or in curated packs.
Choosing the right size and format
The A5 handmade notebooks are ideal for everyday journaling, travel writing, or as a thoughtful gift — the cover fits comfortably under a jacket or in a tote without bulk. If your practice involves sketching, larger handwriting, or keeping press flowers and ephemera, the A4 format gives you considerably more room. For those drawn to something with a more ceremonial quality, the Lokta Traditional Prayer Flag Notebook brings together the written word and visual symbolism in a single object.
Lokta craft and wrapping paper
The same handmade Lokta craft paper appears in our collection as artisan wrapping paper, sold by the sheet or in multi-sheet packs. Because it is made by hand, each piece carries subtle variations in tone and texture — no two sheets are identical. This makes it particularly suited to gifts where the wrapping itself feels considered: wedding favours, book gifts, or small tokens that deserve a moment of attention. Lokta craft paper holds creases cleanly, accepts light drawing and stamping, and adds an earthy, considered layer to any presentation.
Frequently asked questions
Are the journals pre-filled or blank?
All the journals and handmade notebooks in our Library collection are blank inside — the pages are there for you to fill. The Lokta Traditional Prayer Flag Notebook features subtle printed motifs on the cover and inner pages, but the writing surface itself is left clear.
What is Lokta paper made from?
Lokta paper is handmade from the bark of the Lokta shrub (Daphne papyracea), which naturally regenerates after harvesting. The process produces a durable, acid-free paper with a distinctive fibrous texture. It has been used in Nepal for centuries, particularly for official documents and religious texts, which gives it a quietly significant heritage.
How should I care for a Lokta paper journal?
Keep your journal in a dry place, away from prolonged direct sunlight, which can fade the natural tones of the paper over time. The fibre is robust, but like any natural material it responds best to gentle handling. If you use fountain pens or heavier ink loads, test a corner page first — Lokta paper absorbs ink readily and can show through to the reverse.
What sizes are available?
The A5 journals measure approximately 14 × 21 cm and close with an elastic band or stitched binding depending on the style. A4 sheets and packs measure roughly 21 × 29.7 cm. Craft paper in the 51 × 76 cm format is a larger sheet size well suited to wrapping or mounting.
Can the wrapping paper be reused?
Because Lokta craft paper is fairly robust, it can often be used more than once for lighter wrapping duties. Over time the fibres will soften and the paper will develop a gentle patina — many people choose to keep and display pieces rather than discard them, which fits the slow-living ethos of the material.
