Buddha Statue in Vitarka Mudra, Hand-Carved Whitewash 40cm

• The raised hand forms a teaching gesture, a traditional symbol of sharing understanding with clarity and care.
• The seated posture gives the piece a settled, centred feeling, suited to a calm interior rather than a busy display.
• Closed eyes and a slight smile soften the face, giving the carving a gentle stillness.
• Deep robe folds catch the whitewash unevenly, so the carved lines stay visible from across the room.
• The textured hair, long ears and layered drapery add devotional detail without feeling ornate.

The statue is carved by hand from suar wood in Indonesia, using traditional Balinese tools and techniques. A piece of this scale can take weeks to carve, and small variations are part of its character. The whitewash finish sits lightly over the surface, allowing the natural warmth of the wood to remain visible beneath.

Keep it indoors, away from prolonged damp and strong direct heat. Dust with a soft, dry cloth, and avoid harsh cleaners that could disturb the whitewash finish or settle into the carved details.

This is a seated Buddha figure, distinct from the round-bellied Budai often called the ‘laughing Buddha’. In Buddhist art, hand gestures are used to communicate meaning as much as posture or expression. A teaching gesture is associated with the sharing of insight and the turning of attention towards understanding. Here, that symbolism is expressed through a calm face, balanced seated form and careful carving, making the statue suitable for a meditation space, a thoughtful home altar or a serene decorative setting.
