Small Enamelled Box - Pisces

• The lid is a dark, matt navy, ringed with fine gold dots that read like a scatter of stars around the wheel.
• Two Pisces fish swim in opposite directions at the centre of the cream disc, drawn in gold line. Around them, the twelve zodiac constellations sit in their own segments.
• The body is warm, mid-brown wood with a visible grain that runs in soft bands, so the blue lid has a natural, grounded frame.
• A dark metal latch at the front clicks the lid shut and gives the box a slightly vintage, trunk-like feel.

The contrast is what makes it: the natural warmth of the wooden box against the painted enamelled decoration on the lid. The wood is left to show its grain, and the colour is kept to the lid, so the design reads clearly without feeling heavy. It is made in India.

Its size suits the objects people tend to scatter: a ring or two, a pair of earrings, a folded note, a keepsake from a trip, a few tumbled stones. Kept on a dresser, a bedside table or a shelf, it gives those things one place to live, and the closed lid keeps them out of sight. If you open it often, wipe the wood with a dry cloth and keep it away from damp, which wood does not like.

Pisces is the twelfth and last sign of the zodiac, traditionally pictured as two fish swimming in opposite directions, tied together. In astrological tradition the sign is associated with imagination, empathy and a dreamy, intuitive nature, which is why the fish are often drawn in such quiet, flowing lines. The twelve-part wheel around them is the familiar zodiac circle, so the lid works as a small piece of celestial decoration as well as a closure.

For a Pisces, or for anyone who loves astrology, this is an easy gift to get right: personal without being showy, and useful the day it is opened. It suits a birthday, a new home, or a moment when someone is marking a fresh chapter and needs a place to keep what matters.
