About this product
The weave and the feel
- The jute is woven tight enough to hold shape under weight, with the natural golden-brown fibre showing through in places where the weave catches the light.
- It stands upright when empty, thanks to the flat rectangular base and the stiffness jute brings, no limp pooling on the floor.
- The black tortoise print sits clean against the pale jute, screen-printed rather than embroidered, so it stays flat and doesn't snag on what you pack inside.
- A black zip runs the full width of the top, keeping contents secure on a windy day or a crowded train.
Size and what fits inside
It measures 40 cm tall and 40 cm across, with a 15 cm depth front-to-back, roughly the volume of two stacked shoeboxes, or a full weekly shop for one. The cotton-lined interior has side pockets for keys, a phone, or a folded list. The handles are soft cotton webbing and long enough (50 cm drop) to sit comfortably on the shoulder, even over a winter coat.
Construction and detail
The outer is jute; the lining is plain cotton, which hides the weave gaps and protects what you carry from snagging on the rougher inner fibres. Reinforced stitching at the handle join points takes the weight of a full load without pulling away. The zip is a sturdy black coil type, easier to grip than a fine metal slider. It weighs 220 g empty, light enough to fold flat in a drawer between uses.
Jute's place in the world
Jute fibre is harvested from the stem of the Corchorus plant, grown across monsoon regions of India and Bangladesh, where it has been a staple crop for over a century. It is one of the most resource-efficient natural textiles, fast-growing, rain-fed, biodegradable at the end of its life, which is why it moved from coffee sacks and sandbags into everyday bags like this one. The fibre's natural lignin gives it that warm, slightly glossy finish, and the reason it is sometimes called 'golden fibre' in Bengali.
Care and how long it lasts
Wipe marks off with a damp cloth and let it dry flat, away from direct heat. Do not machine-wash or soak it, jute softens and weakens when saturated, and the cotton lining may shrink at different rates. Store it folded or hung in a dry place; damp encourages mildew on natural fibres. Treated with normal care, a jute bag like this outlasts dozens of single-use carriers and, at the end, composts cleanly.
A practical gift
It suits someone switching away from disposable plastic, anyone who walks to the shops, or a friend who likes their everyday objects to carry a bit of intention. The tortoise motif makes it personal without being precious, and the zip means you can hand it over with something already inside, books, wrapped bottles, a plant in a pot, without it spilling open.
