Whitney the Flat Cat Felted Bag

A flat felted shoulder bag shaped as a calico cat, made in Nepal from needle-felted wool. About this product

What you'll notice
  • The cat sits flat against your hip or ribs when you wear it crossbody, moving with you rather than swinging away.
  • The face is asymmetrical, one half black with a yellow eye, the other orange with its own yellow eye, and a cream panel down the centre with embroidered whiskers and nose.
  • The paws curve outward at the bottom, each tipped with a pale pink felted pad, and the ears stand upright with their own pink felt lining.
  • The beaded strap runs through two metal rings at the top and sits comfortably over one shoulder, light enough that you forget it's there.
Needle-felted wool from Nepal

The bag is made by needle-felting, repeatedly stabbing loose wool with barbed needles until the fibres lock together into a dense, stable fabric. The process is slow and done entirely by hand, so each cat comes out with its own slight variation in the placement of the markings and the curve of the paws. The wool is dyed before felting, giving the orange, black and cream panels their saturated, even colour.

How it carries and what fits inside

The opening runs along the top edge between the ears, closed with a zip that sits flat against the felt. Inside there is a single compartment, unlined, with room for a phone, a small purse, keys and a folded cloth bag, enough for a market trip or an afternoon out, but not a full day's kit. The beaded strap is fixed-length and sits at hip height when worn crossbody on most adults; it cannot be adjusted or removed.

Needle-felting and its place in Nepali craft

Needle-felting has been practised in Nepal for generations, particularly in the hill regions where wool from mountain sheep is abundant. While traditional felt was made by wet-felting, rolling damp wool with soap and pressure, needle-felting allows for precise, sculptural forms and detailed surface work. The technique is now widely used for bags, toys and decorative objects, supporting artisan cooperatives across the Kathmandu Valley and the surrounding districts.

Care and keeping

Wool felt is durable but will pill slightly with heavy use. Brush it gently with a soft bristle brush to lift surface fibres, and spot-clean any marks with a damp cloth and a little soap, do not soak or machine-wash it, as the wool will shrink and mat. Store it flat or hanging by the strap, away from moths.

A particular sort of gift

This suits someone with a sense of humour about their accessories, the sort of person who chooses a bag for the conversation it starts rather than how many pockets it has. It makes a memorable gift for cat lovers, craft enthusiasts, or anyone who appreciates handmade objects with character.

Common questions

Is it strong enough for daily use?
Needle-felted wool is tough and will hold up to regular light use, but the strap rings and zip are the points to watch, avoid overloading it or carrying anything heavy, as the felt can stretch or tear at stress points over time.
Will the colours fade?
The dyes are reasonably stable, but prolonged direct sunlight will lighten them gradually. Wear it as you would any textile bag and the colour will hold.
Can I wash it if it gets dirty?
Only spot-clean with a damp cloth. Full immersion or machine-washing will shrink and distort the wool, and the shape will not recover.

    Lovely holiday bag

This is a present for a friend as I already have one very similar. She wanted a casual summery bag for the beach and this is perfect. It will easily hold a large towel, book or kindle, bottle of water and any other bits needed. Inner zip pocket keeps money safe and easily to hand. It's very lightweight cotton but looks
