Yellow Jasper
Opaque chalcedony in mustard yellow: jasper takes its name from the Greek for spotted stone. The zodiac links it with Leo; the chakra tradition places it at the solar plexus.

What is Yellow Jasper?
Jasper is chalcedony (the dense, fine-grained relative of quartz) made opaque by its mineral passengers. Yellow jasper carries iron oxide through its structure, which gives it that warm mustard tone, from pale straw to a deep, almost ochre gold. The name comes from the Greek iaspis, meaning spotted or variegated stone, and it appears in some of the oldest jewellery on record: Egyptian scarabs, Minoan seals, Roman signet rings worn not for beauty alone but for the practical, earthy confidence of a stone that does not scratch or chip.
The tradition's map places yellow jasper at the solar plexus: the centre just below the ribs that the chakra system associates with personal power, standing your ground, and the steadiness that gets you through a difficult room. Its zodiac home is Leo, the sign the sky assigns fire and the fixed quality of something that does not move easily once it has decided. Earth is its second element, which is easy to feel in the hand: this is a heavy stone, cool and grounding, with the weight of geology rather than the lightness of something prettier.
Astrology has traditionally reached for yellow jasper in the seasons that demand nerve: a difficult conversation, a public speaking engagement, the start of something where the outcome is genuinely uncertain. The tradition's advice is unhurried: carry it, wear it, or keep it somewhere visible for a week, and let it hold the shape of an intention (courage, forward motion, the willingness to be seen) in plain, unwritten words. The stone is not doing the work. It is holding the note while you do yours.
