• The sand looks like fine, tinted gravel and feels surprisingly light in the hand, pour it into a shallow bowl or jar and it holds its shape.
• Bergamot lifts first as the wick catches, sharp and citrus-bright, then the pepper adds a clean, almost mineral edge.

This is granulated wax, not traditional poured wax. You pour it loose into your own heat-proof container, a ceramic bowl, a glass jar, a metal tin, then press a cotton wick down into the centre and light it. The wax melts in a pool around the wick and reforms as it cools, so you can rake it smooth and reuse it again and again. It gives you the scent and the flame without committing to a fixed vessel, and you can adjust the depth and shape to suit the container.

Cobalt takes its cue from the fragrance structure of Dior Sauvage, fresh and aromatic rather than heavy or sweet. The bergamot and pepper hit first, bright and almost bracing, like cold air and citrus peel. The heart is lavender, not soapy but herbal and dry, layered over a warm amber base that adds weight without turning the scent syrupy. The woody notes underneath are rugged rather than polished, think cedarwood and vetiver, not vanilla-laced sandalwood. It suits a living room or a workspace, and it reads as contemporary and clean rather than overtly masculine or feminine.

Pour the sand into a heat-proof vessel to a depth of at least 3 cm, press the wick vertically into the centre until it touches the base, and trim the exposed wick to about 5 mm before lighting. Stand the vessel on a heat-proof plate or holder, never on wood or fabric. Extinguish the flame after a few hours and let the wax cool completely before touching. You can smooth the surface with a spoon once it has set, top up the sand if the level drops, and relight it, a single pouch gives you many burns. Never leave a lit candle unattended or near anything flammable.
